The Notorious suffered a brutal second-round defeat to the American at UFC 257 in January and it appears plans are already in place for the pair to go head-to-head for a third time.

McGregor – who stopped The Diamond six years earlier by TKO – is champing at the bit for the chance of redemption and posted an Instagram highlights montage accompanied by a lengthy message to update fans on his next move.

Former two-weight world champ McGregor wrote: “What a trilogy I now have on my hands. Exciting!

“With a handle on the leg kicks I will get back to having fun in there. I was in second gear cruising this fight. Best condition I’ve ever been in.

“After the wrestling and clinch exchanges my shots still held their pop. First time for me with this so I am very encouraged to keep going.

“It was the first time I did not use/nor need the stool between rounds also. I did need the stool after though that’s for sure.

“I am extremely happy I did not need to use the stool between rounds here anyway. Another first for me!

The state of McGregor’s legs were evident after the fight when he left the Etihad Arena on Fight Island on crutches, joking with his opponent that he had broken him.

The 32-year-old, who retreated to his yacht after the fight and is currently holidaying by Moon Island in Abu Dhabi, then picked apart the bout.

“Thoughts on the bout: I enjoyed racking up some more time inside the famed UFC Octagon. Forty seconds in three years is all I’d had up to this bout.

“I was savouring every second and enjoying my work. A little single disciplined in my approach and stance with mostly boxing.

“It’s what I get for picking this bout and opponent as a precursor to a boxing match against Pacman [Manny Pacquiao].

“I deserved to get the legs kicked off me going in with this thinking. This is not the game to play around with.

“Besides this though my shots where sharp and I was in full control. Albeit the leg attacks where building up on me throughout the course.

“Eighteen in total thrown at me, with the final one buckling my leg fully, that was that. The peroneal nerve compromised. Fascinating! First time to experience it.

“Then a tremendous finishing flurry by my opponent. Hats off! A well fought fight by The Diamond.”

He then added he was buzzing at the prospect of trying to make it 2-1 to him when they meet again.

“One a piece now with a trilogy bout for all the marbles! Wow! Exciting!

“Not a trilogy I was expecting, nor the tactical affair I was anticipating, but I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t meant to be.

“This is exactly how this was always meant to be! Buzzing!!”

Shortly after McGregor’s Instagram post, the recently triumphant Poirier took to Twitter to back up the Irishman’s claims of the trilogy being all but agreed.

Conor McGregor looks set to have the chance to avenge his loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 in a rematch this summer.

The Irishman was knocked out in the second round by Poirier after having his mobility kicked away from him.

According to UFC boss Dana White, McGregor is obsessed with a rematch and completing their trilogy with the score 1-1 at the moment and White will oblige.

And why not? UFC 257 is the joint-second highest-grossing card in the company’s history so UFC’s motivation would be clear.

And that’s always been McGregor’s power. He’s far and away the biggest draw in the history of the sport and owns seven of the top ten highest bought fights in UFC history, including the top four.

Many fighters – Nate Diaz included – dislike the fact McGregor has the power to call his own shots as a result and former lightweight title contender Kevin Lee thinks instead of facing Poirier, it should actually be Diaz who McGregor fights next.

He told MMA Junkie: “I think it makes sense for [McGregor] to go fight [Diaz] I know they’re talking about him and Poirier again, but that would be stupid, even on his end.

“I don’t think a lot of people come back from being knocked out and then in an immediate rematch get to win it.

“And it’s like, ‘Come on.’ Can we stop giving the guy so many, I mean, he gets a lot of benefits. He gets to call all his fights and avenge losses right away.

“I’ve had to wait to fight Tony Ferguson three years, really it be four years by the time I fight him, and he gets to do it right away.
