Introduction
Merge Gaming Network may have seen better days, but
Ignition, one of Merge’s flagship skins, definitely made history about a week ago with the release of the first dedicated US-friendly mobile poker app since the Black Friday events made it impossible for most sites to offer their poker products to American customers. The new app has been designed specifically with Apple’s iPad in mind and became available after a few months of rigorous testing. As a result, the Ignition Poker software is exceptionally polished and well optimized, though it does have a few flaws, which we will dive into further below.
Download information and Welcome bonus
The new iPad app from
Ignition Poker is 100% browser-based, which is a result of Apple’s refusal to offer US-facing gambling apps in its official iTunes store. Consequently, players don’t have to commit to a download or install anything on their mobile device. In fact, joining the games is as simple as visiting the mobile version of Ignition Poker site, logging in and choosing the table that will suit your needs. However, please note that the client doesn’t allow you to create and manage your account yet, which means that you’ll have to use the main website to register with the site if you aren’t a Ignition Poker customer yet. What’s more, not every American player will be allowed to join the action, as residents of Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Washington and Washington DC are prohibited from playing on Ignition Poker due to legal reasons. On the other hand, if you’re living in any other State, you’ll be able to take advantage of the site’s amazing $5,000 Initial Deposit Bonus. This bonus is a 200% match on your first payment and can be claimed.

Interface and Features
The new iPad app features a simple lobby with a neat, functional design. The visuals are aesthetically pleasing and rely on the familiar black, blue and white color palette to give the app a distinct Ignition Poker feel. Once you log in, the lion’s share of the screen will be taken by a table browser with the settings menu and quick navigation tabs located at the top of the screen. Unfortunately, the software fails to deliver in terms of game selection, as the available poker variants are limited to Fixed Limit and No Limit Texas Hold’em. Additionally, the biggest supported table size is 6-Max, which is a rather unpleasant surprise if you consider that modern iPads are more than capable of handling full ring games. The available stakes range from NL4 to NL25, but the app has no multi-tabling functionality that could allow it to appeal to micro-stakes grinders. On the other hand, the software doesn’t rely on any annoying matchmaking system to select the tables in your stead, which means that you’ll always be in control of who you’re playing against and when.
However, it’s important to point out that the limited game selection might be a temporary problem, as Ignition Poker officials have already promised to introduce Pot Limit Omaha in the very near future. Sit & Go tournaments can be be played at either regular or turbo speeds. What’s more, the app offers all the customization options you’d expect from a modern mobile poker client and allows you to take advantage of all the must-have features like auto-post blinds, automatic mucks and rebuys. Four-color decks are also available, but the traditional two-color designs are also pretty much spot-on and allow you to tell the suits apart even when viewing your iPad’s display from a considerable distance. Finally, unlike most browser-based apps, the Carbon Poker client is well optimized and performs flawlessly even with a rather slow internet connection, which is rather impressive since the visuals are exceptionally polished, particularly in table mode.

Table Mode & Competition
The gameplay is sufficiently smooth and the software actually looks somewhat impressive once you join one of the games and enter the table mode. As mentioned above, the visuals are exceptionally easy to read, especially with iPad’s expanded screen real estate. The buttons are so large it’s pretty much impossible to make a call or raise by mistake. Furthermore, the app has some chat functionality, but keep in mind that utilizing it requires clicking on the chat button and expanding the message log, which tends to obstruct the action and might even make it hard to react to your opponents’ moves on time. All things considered, the table mode is designed so well it’s simply perplexing that the developers decided to limit the number of players to six, especially since iPad’s trademark Retina Display is excellent when it comes to handling full ring games.
The Merge Gaming Network is currently ranked 22nd in the prestigious PokerScout traffic ranking, but keep in mind that you won’t be able to access all that many tables due to the aforementioned limitations when it comes to supported game types. Consequently, finding a good Fixed Limit game might prove to be rather challenging, particularly if you’re planning to play at some odd hours. On the bright side, No Limit games are available 24/7 and the level of competition is fairly low, which makes Ignition Poker an excellent room for recreational and beginner Hold’em players. However, please note that the rake is fairly high, which means that being profitable over a prolonged period of time might require a little bit more effort than on other, bigger poker sites.
Verdict
Ignition Poker’s new iPad client may not be perfect, but there’s no denying the fact that it is currently the best mobile poker software package available to US-based players. Furthermore, the new app definitely has the potential to match the leading iPad Hold’em products released by the major poker rooms with an update or two.
