A map of the First Nations people of British Columbia as they are generally known today with common pronunciation. First-nation groups have been lobbying for a share of gambling revenue since at least 1993. Plans for a provincial First Nations Gaming Commission got under way in 2010. British Columbia is home to 198 First Nations, about one third of all First Nations in Canada. BC has the greatest diversity of Aboriginal cultures in Canada. Seven of Canada's 11 unique language families are located exclusively in British Columbia, which is more than 60% of the country's First Nations languages.

Gaming initiatives are one way in which First Nations can grow economically and develop their communities. A revenue-sharing agreement between the provincial government and First Nations has created a limited partnership for stable, long-term funding which will impact communities across the province.

First Nations in British Columbia constitute many First Nations governments and peoples in the province of British Columbia. Many of these Indigenous Canadians are affiliated in tribal councils. Ethnic groups include the Haida, Coast Salish, Kwakwaka'wakw, Gitxsan, Tsimshian, Nisga'a and other examples of the Pacific Northwest Coast cultures, and also various Interior Salish and Athapaskan peoples, and also the Ktunaxa.
